Stephen Hunter Hawkins

Stephen Hunter Hawkins was born on March 18, 2006 at 3:47AM to the parents of John and Shara Hawkins. Hunter also has an older sister Alexis and a older brother Paul.

Shara had a hard labor for 10 hours after the doctors broke her water and was inducing her labor because of health reasons.

When Hunter was finally born he had the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck. And he was totally gray. the doctor pulled him out fast and put the clamps on the cord and cut it. They had people from the NIC Unit already there because Shara was having some health problems so just to be safe they had the Trauma team on stand by, Thank God they did, they started working on him instantly. On a scale of 1 to 10 Hunter was a 1 and that was being generously. Hunter was totally Gray when he was born. They had to use the bag to help get some air into his lungs.

Hunter's neck was swollen from the umbilical cord being around his neck. They had to revive him at least once that we were able to see.  But they were still having a hard time to get him to breath. So they rushed him to the NIC Unit with me right on there tails. And my Father in Law Steve was right behind me which meant a lot to me. I really appriseate  the more then he will ever know.

We got down to the NIC Unit and they rushed him into the room and i was on there tails the whole way. I remember some one started to tell me I had to go out of the room and that I couldn't be in there and I tell you what, No one and I do mean No one will tell me that i have to leave my son in the room with out his dad being there, Because if he didn't make it I wanted Hunter to know that I was there for him no matter what the out come would be. So I gave that person the look that would kill and if they did try to make me leave again I may have done just that. So I think the person knew I wasn't kidding because no one said any thing to me again.

It took them it seemed like forever to get the respirator in to his lungs because his neck was so swollen but they finally did and it took them like over 4 hours to get him even stable and I was there the whole time. The doctors didn't think he was going to make it through the night, you could tell just by the look on there face when they seen him, But they worked on him any way. I'm glad they did. And as soon as they got the respirator in and started getting air into his lungs you could see the color start coming back.

And then they started blood work to see if he was getting oxygen into his blood. the first test showed that he was. so a little while later they tested his blood again and they saw a big increase in his oxygen in his blood, they were totally amazed that his symptoms were getting better faster then they ever saw for some one in his condition. which was a good sign.

The next 24 hours would tell if he would make it or not. They ended up having to put Hunter on Morphine to keep him from pulling out all of his tubes. And to amaze the doctors the next day they were able to take him off of the respirator. And the day after that they took the tube out of his belly button. but they still had to keep the feed tube in him because he wasn't eating at all. Hunter also pulled the feeding tube out of his nose twice.

I was there with him for the whole time he was in the NIC Unit until he got to come home. which the day before he got to come home they told us he would more then likely be there for at least 3 weeks if not longer. So Hunter surprised us all and the doctors too.

We will be taking him in to the doctors 4 months after his due date so they can run some test to see if he has any kind of problems due to this. So we are praying he doesn't.
